As the President of the firm, Joe works directly with clients to help them achieve their financial goals.
Joe Smalley began his career working at a talent agency in Beverly Hills. Realizing his passion was finance, not movies, he moved home to Michigan and took a job as an investment representative at a large national brokerage firm in the 1990s. In 1999 he created Smalley Investments to work with families, businesses, and non-profits on a fee-basis. In 2009 he became one of the founding partners of an employee benefits firm, and in 2010 he earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designation.
Outside of the office, Joe enjoys spending time with his family, his dogs, and volunteering in the community. He has been involved with Rotary, The Lansing Community College Foundation, The Lansing Symphony, and The Capital Area Humane Society. Recently, Smalley attended the Social Enterprise Conference at the Harvard Business School, and was an invited participant of the Clinton Global Initiative. An avid sportsman, Joe enjoys golf and tennis.
Magglio is a calming influence on all who visit the office, with the possible exception of the mail carrier. He specializes in wagging, sleeping, and looking out the window.
A native Michigander, Nicole grew up in the suburban Detroit area. As a young adult, she moved to California where she studied Creative Writing. She began her career in software documentation and worked as a contractor for an environmental testing company. Once that assignment ended she made an industry leap into the investment business. She worked in the event planning department of a small brokerage firm in Newport Beach. She enjoyed the business very much, but decided she’d rather be involved in trading and operations, so she obtained all the required licenses and has been working at brokerage/investment firms for the last 17 years. Although she loved the California weather, she missed her family, friends and the beautiful seasons. She moved back to Michigan in 2011.
Nicole enjoys wine tasting, hobby writing and volunteering when she can for local charities such as Lansing Habitat for Humanity. An avid musician, she enjoys singing and playing drums. She also loves camping with her family, and being at the beach.
With lifelong passion for solving problems and working with numbers, Ryan found himself drawn to the world of finance. Since earning his management degree from the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, Ryan has spent the past 10 years in client service and investment management. With his financial services background, he is perfectly suited for the Paraplanner position at Smalley Investments, focusing on personal wealth. His critical role is to provide the behind-the-scenes magic that our clients rely upon, including helping Advisors build wealth plans, investment research, re-balancing, meeting preparation, and coordinating the follow up and implementation that is often necessary after meetings. Ryan brings a can-do attitude and strong work ethic to the office every day.
Ryan and his wife Bethany have two children and are active members of their church. They are passionate Spartans, holding season tickets for football and basketball. Ryan is also the company golf ringer, being the only team member to break 80.
Commonwealth was ranked “Highest in Independent Advisor Satisfaction Among Financial Investment Firms” in the J.D. Power and Associates 2013 Financial Advisory Satisfaction Study*, and has been ranked as a Best Place to Work in both Boston and San Diego. While they have more than 600 home office employees throughout the country who support us, here are the bios of the folks that we work most often - members of the research department, and the retirement plan department. I think you will agree, there is a lot of talent on this team.
